Exterior corona effect on sphere-plane discharge in SF6 gas utilizing optical measurement

The discharge characteristics of composite electrodes having a needle as the secondary electrode in SF6 gas under μs rectangular pulsing were examined. The discharge voltage in the composite electrodes was dependent on the resistance between the needle and high-voltage terminal. With a sharply rising pulse, the discharge voltage-resistance characteristics showed unexpected features. The corona behavior of the composite electrodes was investigated utilizing an ultrahigh-speed digital framing camera (IMACON 468). The relationship between the corona initiated from the needle and the breakdown voltage of the gap between the sphere and plane electrodes was examined on the basis of the optical measurement.
