Use of automatically controlled synchronous motors for railway traction has been tested since 1980; it is a remarkable breakthrough: more powerful motors may be installed in the existing space of bogies, and the engines thus equipped, are capable of driving both fast and heavy trains. The design of a new 'double current' locomotive with synchronous motors offers an opportunity to review several mechanical and electrical features.
