Impact forces of breaking waves on a vertical circular cylinder have been precisely measured at the different heights above the still water level. The initial sudden rise appears clearly in the force-time record measured near the wave crest. The forces near the still water level rise slowly without a marked sudden onset. However, they reach to the peak values at almost the same time. The time variation of the force is investigated theoretically and it is found that the front shape of breaking wave determines the rising time of impact force.
