Pilot plant tests for processing red mud carried out by FNE - Research Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals, Freiberg (GDR) - and ALUTERV-FKI - HUNGALU Engineering and Development Centre, Budapest, Hungary - are reported. The process described permits recovery of 91% of Na//2O, 74% of Al//2O//3 and 98% of Fe//2O//3 in the form of diluted caustic liquor, alumina and open-hearth pig iron, respectively. The residue after leaching the slag can be used in cement production.
