The Voitsberg 3 thermal power station, having a rated capacity of 330 MW,. feeds the Styrian 110 kv systems. The operation of such a large unit output on a 110 kv system with a maximum short-circuit power of 5 GVA calls for special protections to maintain turbo set and network stability in the case of nearby three-pole short circuits. The good functioning of all the line, busbar and generating unit protections and of the Voitsberg 3 station auxiliaries was tested by means of an induced nearby three-pole short-circuit on the Voitsberg 110 kv busbar. The test has shown that given accurate test planning and adequate precautions in the 110 kv switchgear, at the protections and on the 110 kv network, it is possible to carry out a network short-circuit test without incurring undue risks.
