In the preheater equipped with secondary firing (precalcining) an advanced degree of calcination of cement raw meal is achieved. To make a correct assessment of the problems of calcining in the preheater the chemical and physical processes are examined. These reveal clear-cut relationships and optimum design characteristics for the preheater, the calciner and the rotary kiln. They result in extreme reductions in kiln dimensions. Variants for special purposes are also dealt with.
