Ceramic foundry molds made from permanent patterns usually consist of a thin refractory shell backed by a supporting layer of chamotte mixture bonded with soluble silicate. During firing and pouring, the supporting layer warps and the quality of the castings is lowered. Tools required in the Minsk Tractor Works are made in a newly developed type of ceramic mold supported by a shaped metal jacket. The jacket is made from grade SCh18 grey iron.
