This paper is concerned with the use of chemi-thermomechanical pulps of high yield as alternatives to the chemical pulps normally used as reinforcement pulps in newsprint furnishes. By impregnation with sodium-sulfite before preheating and refining it is possible to make high strength pulps of almost the same yield as standard thermo-mechanical pulp. It is shown that a newsprint sheet based on groundwood and reinforced with CTMP will have at least as high surface smoothness and at least as low print through at a given strength and density as compared to conventionally reinforced newsprints.
