Coating systems containing zinc offer excellent corrosion protection for steel. This paper reviews the various coating systems with zinc in their formulation and illustrates that, although in some cases their initial cost may be high, their life expectancy is long, and thus, their use is economical. It deals primarily with the economics of two metallic zinc coatings, hot dip galvanizing and zinc-rich paints. Both of these coatings provide excellent protection for steel and have long, effective service lives before maintenance is required.
