Semiconductor ICs are used in automobile systems to control the emission and ignition, thereby reducing NOx and HC contents of the exhaust. Wiper control ICs and tachometer ICs are also used in many autos. In addition, ICs for battery recharging, ignition system, operation control and safety devices are being developed. Many of these ICs are bipolar and in designing them various measures for use under special conditions involved in the automobiles are provided. This report discusses auto electronics mainly through trends in the latest auto ICs and design of bipolar ICs.
