摘要
This paper introduces a new class of melt-processable thermoplastics, called liquid crystal polymers (LCP), which - with excellent properties and performance - have been found to be simpler and easier to mold than some others in their high-performance repertoire. This article gathers together what processing information is currently available from suppliers and knowledgeable users. The bulk of it relates to injection molding, though extrusion and compression molding uses for LCP's are coming along fast. While two families of LCP's are described in this article, only one is fully commercial: Dartco Manufacturing, Inc. This company produces aromatic polyester based on three monomers: terephthalic acid, parahydroxybenzoic acid, and biphenol. Processing condition and properties of the new LCP, introduced on the market under the trade name 'Xydar', are described in some detail.
