**1**3C NMR (natural abundance, room temperature) in a range of graphite lamellar compounds with donors or acceptors is interpreted in terms of charge transfer. The observed shifts and structure are related to anisotropic chemical shifts, or to Knight shifts, or a combination of both effects.
