Conventional fiber bed mist eliminators are manufactured by packing bulk fiber between two rigid concentric screens. These mist eliminators provide satisfactory performance under normal design conditions but when mist loads or gas flow exceed these conditions, the collected mist can be re-entrained by the exiting gas stream. A patented bicomponent fiber bed has been developed which uses a special liquid drainage layer to eliminate re-entrainment of collected mist. The new fiber bed design has greater bed uniformity and density which results in pressure drop (energy) savings of up to 20%, when compared with conventional fiber beds. Subsequent developemnt work has produced a new series of fiber bed elements which show both reduced pressure drops and lower capital costs.
