The influence of the graphite structure on the eutectoid transformation process in ductile iron castings was studied theoretically and empirically. The appropriate graphite structure variables and their relationship with the matrix structure variables and elements were determined by applying regression analysis techniques on the experimental data from metallographic samples of ductile iron plate castings. The results of this study agree with previous experimental findings that silicon has no effect on the diffusion rate of carbon in ferrite while manganese, on the contrary, substantially reduces the diffusion coefficient.
