An equation exists for calculating the required retaining forces of chain clamping devices. It results in at least 1. 5 times the safety factor obtained from the measurements on the surface and underground. The influence of the type of coupling (fluid or elastic) and tensioning method (one or two tensioning motors, tensioning length) are taken for the most unfavourable case. It could be proved that, despite the 1. 5-fold safety, lower retaining forces were needed than was generally assumed before the measurements.
