Principal problems created by today's air traffic control system which utilizes radio channels for radio-telephony, allocated in the metric waveband for the civilian service in metropolitan areas, and in a limited numerical channel associated with secondary radar, specialized for the control service, are considered. The suggestions for the introduction of an earth/air data link in addition to the voice channels existing today, its advantages and possible solutions are critically re-examined.
