摘要
The hot pressing of silicon nitride based materials, with and without additives, has been investigated. For the production of dense specimens, liquid phase assisted densification was found to be necessary. In the case of beta -sialons, by control of the starting composition, the liquid phase was essentially transient; after fabrication only thin amorphous films were detected at grain boundaries. In contrast, when yttria was employed as a densification aid, multi-phased materials resulted because the beta -silicon nitride structure was unable to accommodate the sintering aid.
