摘要：

Faced with the task of developing a new course in materials engineering, the author presents a personal specification. Based on several years activity in both disciplines, a topic-based, rather than a material-based approach is argued for as well as a significant exposure to the traditional engineering subjects. The importance of providing opportunities for the development of personal skills and attributes is emphasised.
