The use of latex in many applications requires a high-solids content (approximately 60 percent) to prevent excessive shrinkage in the final product as well as a viscosity low enough (1,000 cpa or lower) to permit mixing and the other processing steps necessary for the preparation of foamed rubber, coatings, and dipped goods. The methods for the preparation of high-solids/low viscosity latices are discussed. Reference is given to the methods used for measuring both particle size and viscosity characteristics of these latices.
