The composition of the grain boundaries in polycrystalline MnZn ferrites has been determined by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The concentration profile near the grain boundary was determined by means of a combination of sputter etching and AES on freshly broken small and large grained samples of the same overall composition as well as on MnZn single crystals. It is shown that potassium, present as contamination of the starting material, enriches the grain boundary and influences thus the microstructure and physical properties of low loss MnZn ferrites.
