We introduce the concept of a hardware descriptive language (HDL) and discuss the use of HDLs to describe the structure and function of circuits. Three major electronic HDLs that have evolved in the VLSI industry are introduced. Their applicability to microwave circuits is discussed. As MMIC technology evolves, HDLs will play a prominent role in the development and communication of microwave circuit and system design information.
