The design and operation of plasma arc crucible furnaces must be such as to ensure that melt-down takes place from the very beginning. It must be possible to keep the power input constant over the whole melt-down period. The furnace chamber must not be subject to any excessive thermal stresses. The configuration and thermal behavior of d. c. plasma arcs for crucible furnaces is described.
