The SPV46 steel plate (YS greater than equivalent to 46kgf/mm**2) has been developed by the DAC (Dynamic Accelerated Cooling) process. The Pcm value of the steel is extremely low by microalloying with Nb, Ti, and B, and by adopting the DAC process. A sufficient strength level was obtained for up to 38 mm in thickness with extremely good low temperature toughness at the base metal. Weld crackability was excellent due to the low Pcm value. The SSCC property of a welded joint was sufficient because of a low HAZ hardness due to a low Ceq value. Therefore, it was proved that the developed steel was suitable for the construction of spherical storage tanks as well as other large welded structures.
