REGULATION AND CONTROL IN PHYSIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS.

The papers referred to here are grouped in the proceedings of the conference under the heading: Glucose Metabolism. The first (commentary) paper states that this session brings together most of the kinds of data which have been amassed in this field as well as examples of the principal models which have been applied. Some of the data display a richness not hitherto found, and so present a challenge to mathematical description. The question of the appropriate boundaries of the system also arises. Though this question is probably best resolved in terms of the heuristic value of a given model, it raises the possibility of a general description of glucose metabolism which can meet the needs of multiple applications through a process of successive simplifications.
