The applicability of the method of fault diagnosis using signed, directed graphs was investigated experimentally for a pilot plant with two reactors, in which an exothermic, gas-liquid reaction took place on a solid catalyst. Eleven origins of failures were considered. The technique is shown to be capable of diagnosing the origins of failures with great accuracy and speed, provided the sensors are located correctly.
