Synthesis and characterization of light-emitting polymers based on binaphthalene and fluorene

Polymers based on binaphthalene and fluorene were synthesized and characterized. The polymers have good thermal stability, solubility and photoluminescence quantum efficiency. The electroluminescence spectra of the polymers are generally different from their photoluminescence due to excimer aggregate formation. A purer binaphthalene photoluminescence is obtained in P1F3B. However, aggregate/excimer emission still dominates the electroluminescence spectrum of P1F3B. The photoluminescence of P1F1B shows two strong and well-resolved new emission peaks that are dominant in the electroluminescence of P1F1B. The 25% binaphthyl groups in P3F1B slightly suppress the polyfluorene aggregate formation in both the photoluminescence and electroluminescence.
