One of the main parameters influencing the durability of wire ropes are the stresses. Among various stresses the essential role is played by the contact stresses which appear in the bottom of the sheave groove and between the wires of the strands themselves. An increase of the fatigue life of ropes can be obtained by the reduction of those stresses. Reduction of the contact stresses can be obtained by the application of a sheave lining or by changing the kind of contact in the strands from point ones to linear or surface ones.
