Concern is expressed for the current and future levels of research on physico-chemical phenomena that are important for continued advancement of the technological base of pyrometallurgical processing. Surface and interfacial phenomena that are of great importance in newer processing methods are not well understood, particularly because they are high-temperature systems. The nature of the current level of understanding of surfaces, interfaces and interfacial phenomena is illustrated with selected examples, and the direction for research is indicated.
