A landmark document entitled ″Personnel Qualification and Certification in Nondestructive Testing,″ designated SNT-TC-1A, was issued by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) in 1968. This document was promptly adopted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code as the criteria for qualifying and certifying nondestructive testing (NDT) personnel. This document has provided the basis for most of the NDT personnel qualification and certification programs that are in place throughout the industrialized world. As SNT-TC-1A became widely used and referenced, deficiencies became apparent and in 1975, 1980, and 1984, revisions were published to clarify and modify various paragraphs.
