Lyoluminescence is the emission of visible light during the dissolution of irradiated organic and inorganic solids in pure water. This phenomenon has attracted many researchers of various disciplines like radiation physics, radiation chemistry and physical chemistry. Amongst the alkali metal halides sodium chloride crystals have been extensively used for lyoluminescence study during last two decades. The object of the review is to understand various parameters which control the light yield during the dissolution of irradiated NaCl in water.
