The measurement criteria for the use of **1**4C as an oceanic water-mass tracer are reviewed, including the particular conditions of ship-board water sampling. A status report is then given on the effort of the US government to meet the special requirements of an AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometer) facility for oceanography.
