The criteria governing the choice of the process computer controlled monitoring system at an important pumping station in Hamburg are reviewed. A description is given of the fully automatic system chosen which is characterized by process computer control and optimal operation with unlimited possibility of manual control. Also described is the conventional manual control which operates in parallel with the process computer system.
