A modular program system based on microprocessors has been developed for the automated temperature control of reheating furnaces. It can be matched without major alterations to the particular features of widely differing reheating furnaces. The program system has been used for one year for the pusher-type furnaces of a wire rod and merchant bar mill. It ensured an average saving in energy of 3% to 5%, an even reheating of the material to be rolled, and a relief for the furnace personnel.
