The designs of six black liquor evaporator suppliers were reviewed. The basic design considerations involving heat transfer, scaling and heat balances are summarized. Different types of evaporators are discussed. The electrical power consumptions of the various designs are similar, with the exception of the forced circulation concentrator. Steam economies are also similar. Design parameters such as heat fluxes and specific loadings are more significant than heat transfer coefficients. Heat transfer surface area is the basic parameter.
