A survey was made of three manufacturers of proprietary goods, five packaging printers, and three printing machine manufacturers with respect to their use of cardboard or corrugated board for folding boxes and their preference for printing (offset or flexography) on the cardboard and corrugated board. The manufacturers of proprietary articles surveyed were Braun AG, Nestlé, and Eckes AG. Braun AG requires 600-800 different packaging per year in high quality printing. There are about 200 new developments for packaging that are made each year by different printers. Cardboard is preferred. The share of laminations is slight. Offset is preferred. The Nestlé facility at Frankfurt am Main needs about 2,000 different packaging per year. Offset is preferred. Eckes AG requires about 80 different packaging per year for spirits, of which 20 are new developments. Corrugated board is mostly used. The E-corrugation has 85% share and cardboard 15%. Flexography is preferred but there is some offset. The responses of these three companies are given in detail. The detailed responses are similarly provided from the packaging printers Carl Eichhorn GmbH corrugated board plant, Gissler & Pass GmbH, Model Kramp GmbH, and SCA Packaging Oftringen, and from the printing machine manufacturers MAN Roland AG, Koenig & Bauer AG Radebeul, and Bobst Group SA. According to J. L. Cachin (Bobst Group SA, Switzerland), Bobst makes a complete range of printing machines including machines for offset printing of the finest corrugations. Folding boxes made of corrugated board provide high stability and enable weight reduction. The reaction of the market to this packaging material is positive but the path to market acceptance will take a long time. Photographs.
