In a cached data storage system, count key data and extended count key data architecture coexist, making it necessary to determine when a LOCATE RECORD domain has expired. This determination includes counting the number of records processed and examination of chaining. Examples are provided. A microcode counter for counting the number of records processed through the cache, plus a flag for indicating in the microcode chaining from a READ COUNT or READ COUNT MULTITRACK, are employed.
