The objectives of this study were to develop an analytical procedure, for determination of asbestos in vermiculite, which has a sensitivity of at least 0. 01%, and to use this technique to identify and quantify any asbestos fibers detected in representative samples of vermiculite taken from the mine at Phalaborwa. A further objective was to carry out an air sampling study in a vermiculite exfoliation plant to compare the airborne fiber concentrations reported by the phase contrast optical technique with those obtained using analytical electron microscopy.
