This paper proposes a new system for the remote access and measurement of branched fibers in passive double star networks. In this system, the key technologies are the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technique and a wavelength variable optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) which has several measurement wavelengths. These technologies are used for the remote injection of a measurement light into a particular in-service branched fiber or fiber ribbon. The feasibility of the system was confirmed by an experiment using a 2×16 optical splitter incorporating WDM technology. A specific 4-fiber ribbon fault was located from among four 4-fiber ribbons without disrupting signal transmission at 1.31/1.55 μm by using an OTDR operating at 1.61 to approximately 1.68 μm.
