The operator of a hydroelectric project that has usable storage must continuously select a hydro production level; otherwise, if it is operated on a run-of-river basis, the hydro production level is set by the available streamflow or the power demand. This article looks at ways of refining storage management and optimizing operational choices by forecasting.
