X-ray diffraction data and plots of porosity versus deposit thickness are presented for bright, semi-bright, and unbrightened gold deposits plated from a citrate-phosphate electrolyte. At low deposit thicknesses both crystallography and porosity are dependent on the surface characteristics of the substrate. At greater thicknesses the slope of the porosity-thickness curve is controlled by parameters relevant to the deposit itself. Between these two regimes there is a transition region in which porosity falls rapidly.
