A method of calculating fatigue life in the stage of fatigue crack initiation under a load resulting in variable-amplitude stress is presented. Corrected local stress behaviors and the corresponding hysteresis loops are derived, and the calculation sequence and certain elements of the calculations are discussed. Two methods of calculating the stresses and strains in the notch root are presented, showing that Neuber's formula gives an over-estimate of them.
