摘要
The San Gabriel Valley is a prosperous, almost totally urbanized area of residential and commercial tracts. The San Gabriel Basin yields 200,000 ac ft of groundwater a year from 400 water supply wells. This water makes up 95% of the valley's water supply. Already 30% of the water traditionally pumped from the basin has been affected by contamination. A total of 18 toxic chemicals have been found in the water, some at depths as great as 700 ft. Any solution that is intended to reduce the spread of contamination will require cooperation among the different water users in order to manage the problem through controlled pumping. Plans must also include alternate sources of water.
