A simple, cheap, reliable and convenient device has been developed which is suitable for measuring point-wise vertical forces generated under the feet in walking. It requires only standard, readily available instrumentation (strain gages) to accompany it, and two simple jigs to assist manufacture and calibration. It requires a laboratory or clinical environment and is not suitable for gait modes other than walking. It has been used with success in a study of force distribution under the feet of subjects with advanced rheumatoid arthritis, before and after corrective surgery.
