The 1986 Amendment to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) produced several new regulations including the Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR). Membrane filtration has been successfully used to satisfy the filtration requirements of the SWTR.2,3,4 Membrane filtration has long been used for conducting coliform analysis in water and wastewater laboratories. With current membrane process technology, it is possible to provide economical treatment for small and large scale systems. Pilot, bench and full-scale studies with UF and MF membrane processes have demonstrated several log removal of bacteria, Giardia cysts and viruses. These membrane processes can also reduce disinfection by-product precursors with proper treatment.
