Sugars have traditionally been linked together as either N or O links via the anomeric carbon to make larger compounds. However, using amide linkages to join sugar units together provides much greater stability under various conditions, including acidic and biological. Experiments including NH/ND exchange and circular dissolution have given strong evidence that there is some type of ordered secondary structure.
