BOUND EXCITONS IN SURFACE LAYERS OF CdS SINGLE CRYSTALS.

A study was made of the influence of electron bombardment of the surface of cadmium sulfide crystals by electrons of a few kiloelectron-volt energy on the intensity of bound-exciton luminescence lines. This intensity changed because of an increase in the sulfur vacancy concentration in the surface layers and also because of a change in the surface electric field. The bound-exciton luminescence was found to be a sensitive indicator of the state of the surface of these crystals.
