The considerable wear resistance of cast slag plates is due to the mineralogical constitution of the starting material and also its structure. The addition of commercial alumina to the slag melt makes it possible to obtain a fine crystalline structure having a high wear resistance. The advantage of cast slag plates, in addition to high wear resistance and increase in good transit properties of the sinter charge in the conveyors, include their weight which is approximately 35% less than the weight of metal plates of the same size. At the same time, cast slag plates have drawbacks, the main one being their brittleness which requires care to be taken during their transport and storage.
