The single-electron capture and excitation dynamics in collisions of A12+ ions with He atoms in the energy region from 0.05 to 1000 keV/u for both ground and excited A12+ ions were studied. Excitation cross sections for the two cases were quite different. Trajectories based on the straight line and the ground-state potential gave nearly identical results for electron capture down to 100 eV/u, while significant deviations started to emerge below a few tens of eV/u.
