Numerous data have shown that appreciable gas liberation, which depends on the frequency and intensity of irradiation with sound, is observed in the ultrasonic irradiation of metal-or glass-walled vacuum electronic devices. A hypothesis is submitted which attributes the liberation of gas to shaking loose of particles adhering to the wall and the liberation in vacuum of gas previously ″locked in″ by those particles. The conditions for detachment of the adherent particles are given, along with the requisite relations between the particle dimensions and the frequency and amplitude of the wall oscillations for such detachment to take place.
