Change of distribution of free volume holes during crystallization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) revealed by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy

Positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) was measured as a function of the annealing time of PET at 130°C. For purposes of comparison, the macroscopic density and the WAXS were measured simultaneously. Direct evidence was obtained that the small size component of the free volume distribution disappears by the crystallization of amorphous PET. The present result demonstrates the uniqueness and usefulness of the PAL method for direct measurements of sub-nm vacancies.
